April 27, 2009: To This May, W.S. Merwin

To This May
W.S. Merwin
They know so much more now about
the heart we are told but the world
still seems to come one at a time
one day one year one season and here
it is spring once more with its birds
nesting in the holes in the walls
its morning finding the first time
its light pretending not to move
always beginning as it goes

[My favorite Merwin poem is still A Birthday, but everything he writes is wonderful. How had I overlooked him for so long?]

A year ago today: Father, Ted Kooser
Two years ago: from Little Sleep’s-Head Sprouting Hair in the Moonlight, Galway Kinnell
Three years ago: Crusoe in England, Elizabeth Bishop
Fouryears ago: Dream Song 1, John Berryman
